Modified Atkins diet modifies cardiopulmonary exercise characteristics and promotes hyperventilation in healthy subjects

Low-carbohydrate diets, including the modified Atkins diet (mAD), are commonly used to promote weight loss, improve exercise performance, and treat refractory epilepsy inherited metabolism disorders. However, effects of high-fat-low-carbohydrate on physiology healthy subjects still need further study. We evaluated physiological influence mAD cardiopulmonary results in adult subjects. Ten volunteers followed for four weeks with laboratory follow-up. Cardiopulmonary tests were performed before, at end mAD, venous lactate, ammonia, blood gases collected during, after testing. Four-week decreased subjects’ mechanical efficiency test caused increased ventilation fraction expired CO2 maximal exercise. This evidence suggests that can cause hyperventilation tendency least short term, a possible adverse effect diet.
